The Gorgeous Mountain Ghosts

You'll Never Forget New Zealand Tahr Hunting

Known for their agility, beautiful shaggy manes, and challenging alpine habitat, a New Zealand Himalayan Tahr hunt is rewarding and unforgettable. Join us to chase these 'kings of the mountains' - this is high-country NZ hunting at its finest!

New Zealand Tahr Hunting

Like other large New Zealand game species, Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus) were introduced to the South Island to provide a challenge for hunters. Today, local and international hunters can take to the ‘hills’ in pursuit of one of the world’s premier alpine trophy animals. An average New Zealand tahr can weigh 250 to 300 pounds, bulls can be very assertive, and tahr live and graze at high altitudes in rocky alpine grasslands and sub-alpine shrublands.

Southern Hunting Adventures offers several quality hunting options for our highly-prized Himalayan tahr. From hard hunts to more comfortable adventures – join us in pursuit of New Zealand’s famed tahr for an alpine challenge that you’ll never forget! This is NZ hunting at its finest – our certified guides guarantee shot opportunities on all tahr hunts.

Himalayan Tahr Hunting Seasons

New Zealand tahr can be hunted year-round! Himalayan tahr hunting is best here from February through November with peak rut hunting occurring May through early July. Bull tahr are in their prized winter coats April through August and can be found in their summer coats in late October through March.

New Zealand Tahr Hunting Packages & Pricing

Due to the wide variety of requests we receive from hunters and the number of tahr hunting combinations you can dream up, we generally quickly sketch a customized quote for you that depends on the number of hunters in your group, the species and quality of animal or animals you’re after, and the length of your vacation or desired NZ hunting trip. You can get an approximate sense of our Himalayan tahr hunt pricing and a few of the packages we offer in the section below – but please feel encouraged to send us a quick note with a little bit of information about you and your dream tahr hunt. We’ll respond to give you a better idea of what your tahr hunting adventure will cost. Don’t worry – one of our favorite parts of this line of work is working with hunters to build the hunt you’re after at a budget that works for you!

Tahr hunting access in New Zealand: due to their alpine habitat, Himalayan tahr generally require a helicopter flight or private land access (we offer both). Without using a helicopter, hunters will need to hike a lot (days) and will generally end up paying additional guide day fees that negate the savings of avoiding helicopter fees. We’re happy to offer all three methods of tahr hunting (helicopter access, private land, and hike-in access) but find that hunters appreciate clarity around how hunters can access tahr & NZ hunting.

*All tahr hunt prices are approximate, subject to change, and listed in $USD.  Send us an inquiry to learn more about tahr hunting New Zealand or NZ hunting!

Himalayan Tahr NZ Hunting Testimonials

himalayan tahr chamois hunting nz tahr hunt

In August, me and my girlfriend (both from Italy) booked two hunting expeditions for New Zealand's West Coast - hunting Chamois and Himalayan Tahr with Angus McDowell as guide. In the first NZ hunting expedition, I took a huge bull tahr (13 inches); in the second expedition we hunted 2 beautiful buck chamois.

Angus is an incredible hunter and one of the best hunting guides I have ever had in my life...he is a determined and very nice person! Always positive and a very good approach to the clients and to the hunting...
I absolutely recommend it !!!

New Zealand tahr Review

himalayan tahr hunting new zealand thar
We spent a week hunting and touring the South Island with Sheldon - it was awesome start to finish. My wife, 12 year old son and I, from Canada, all had an excellent time. The trophies were everything we expected and more!

We couldn't have asked for a more experienced and knowledgeable guide for hunting and learning about New Zealand. A couple days after the hunting, our son said he missed hanging out with Sheldon. I wouldn't go with anyone else and can't wait to go back for another hunt!
