Southern Hunting Adventures
New Zealand
New Zealand’s Premier Hunting & Wilderness Guides
This is our home. My dad was a professional rabbit shooter for a huge number of the ranches in Otago; I knew how to drive hundreds of ranch roads, in the dark, before I was legally able to drive. We consider the South Island of New Zealand to be the perfect outdoor-person’s paradise. Yes, we hike, we bike, we boat, we build bonfires on beaches, and we ski – but when we close our eyes and take a deep breath – we see the far-flung, quiet, lonely places: the forests and hills patrolled by antlered giants, the high ledges haunted by nimble mountain quarry that sneak like shadows in the rocks, and the seas of tussock grass ever ready to betray us with the flick of a tail or pivot of an ear. We hear stags roaring, the wind in the trees, turkeys gobbling, rushing rivers, and elk screaming their lungs out at one another. We smell fresh earth and mānuka, wildflower meadows, steaks on the grill, and gunpowder in the early morning mountain air. We live for this. We daydream about it when we happen to find ourselves in town on a supply run. We might even travel, but we always ache to return home…the South Island of New Zealand.
If you’re from New Zealand – you already know why we’re so passionate about New Zealand. If you’re from somewhere else – we want you to feel these things, too. Regardless of where you call home, we’re here to share our favorite things about one of the world’s perfect hunting destinations with you.
Essentially, Southern Hunting Adventures offers opportunities for all of New Zealand’s free-range & fair chase game animals. The season, your location, and your ideal trip length & budget are the primary considerations when we build hunts. We guide hunters from around the planet for chamois, Himalayan tahr, red stag, Fallow deer, Pacific goat, Arapawa ram, Merriam’s turkey, wild boar, wallaby, and even small game “varminting” for rabbit, hare, and possum.
Game birds, hunted in their respective seasons, include Californian Quail, Chukkah, Canadian Geese, Ducks, Pheasant, Red-Legged Partridge, and Wild Turkey. We also offer packaged hunts for Whitetail deer, Rusa deer, Sambar deer, Sika deer, and New Zealand Elk/Wapiti. A few of these species require licences to hunt – these can be arranged for each member of the party.
New Zealand red stag hunting is a serious passion for local and international hunters alike. Diverse terrain and good trophy populations make hunting red stag a “can’t miss” New Zealand experience.
Known for their agility, beautiful shaggy coats, and challenging alpine habitat – a New Zealand Himalayan tahr hunt is rewarding and unforgettable. Join us to chase these ‘kings of the mountains.’
It would be a mistake to underestimate the compact Chamois – this may be New Zealand’s most challenging hunt! Chamois are found in only a few places in the world – join us to find out why hunters love pursuing them.
Possessing palmate antlers, a range of color phases, and a street fighting disposition – the mighty Fallow buck is a true New Zealand challenge. Fallow deer are widely considered one of the most beautiful deer species in the world. Join us!
